President Obama is sure to get a political boost from the U.S. killing of Osama bin Laden.
Just as President Carter seems to be ineffective after a failed military mission in 1980 to rescue U.S. hostages in Iran, Mr. Obama’s advantage from the opposite outcome. He was wrapped in an aura of success. And that the success message will stay in the news for days and weeks to come, as the details of the planning and execution of complex attack Sunday on Al Qaeda in Pakistan appears. Obama himself won praise from some of the political spectrum to handle the business as supreme commander.
But it did not last long. Just ask the President first. He scored a major political victory after the 1991 Gulf War, only to lose re-election year and a half later in the midst of high unemployment. In 2012, Obama also will eventually be judged first and foremost on the state of the U.S. economy, which is still digging out from a deep recession.
